Darjeeling in November 2026: Weather, Things to Do & Travel Guide
Published 01 October, 2026
November is one of the best months of the year to visit Darjeeling. The monsoon has fully cleared, the air is crisp but not yet freezing, and Kanchenjunga shows itself on most mornings.
It is the sweet spot between the October holiday rush and the December cold. Days are pleasant for long sightseeing drives, the tea gardens are still green after the autumn flush, and the town comes alive with Tihar lights and the Darjeeling Carnival.
This guide covers November weather, what to pack, the best things to do, festivals, how to get here from NJP or Bagdogra, and a ready-made 3-day itinerary.
Darjeeling weather in November
Expect cool, dry and sunny days, with daytime highs around 15–17°C and nights dropping to 6–8°C. It gets colder through the month, so late November feels close to winter.

November is too early for snow in Darjeeling town. Sandakphu may get its first snowfall late in the month.
The early November mornings can bring some leftover haze in the valleys, but by mid-month the skies are usually crystal clear.
What to pack for Darjeeling in November
Light woollens are enough for the afternoons, but evenings and early mornings need proper warm layers.
- A medium jacket, plus a heavier one if you are travelling in the second half of the month
- Sweaters or fleece for layering
- Thermal innerwear for the Tiger Hill trip and cold nights
- Woollen cap, gloves and a muffler
- Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for steep lanes
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm, as the sun is strong at altitude
- Power bank and a small daypack for long sightseeing days
- Basic medicines for cold, cough and motion sickness on hill roads
- Original ID for hotel check-in, plus extra photocopies and photos if you plan to enter Sikkim
Best things to do in Darjeeling in November
- Tiger Hill sunrise. November skies give excellent views of Kanchenjunga turning gold at dawn. Leave by 4–4:15 am, and carry a warm jacket for the wait.
- Taste the autumn flush. Autumn-flush Darjeeling tea, with its rich, mellow flavour, is fresh in the shops. Visit Happy Valley Tea Estate or a tea lounge on Mall Road for a tasting.
- Ride the toy train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway joy ride to Ghoom and Batasia Loop runs on clear, sunny mornings. Book on IRCTC in advance.
- Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery. Both sit on the Tiger Hill return route, so cover them on the same morning.
- Peace Pagoda and Japanese Temple. Calm spots with wide views of the town and the snow range.
- Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and HMI. Red pandas, snow leopards and the mountaineering museum next door. The zoo is closed on Thursdays.
- Mall Road and Chowrasta. Evening walks, local bands during carnival season, momos, thukpa and old-world cafés.
- Lamahatta and Peshok day trip. Pine forests, prayer flags and Teesta valley views, about an hour from town. See our Lamahatta–Peshok sightseeing package.
- Mirik and Kurseong. A quiet lake, orange orchards starting to ripen, and orchid gardens. See our Kurseong day trip.
- Sandakphu trek or drive. November is one of the best months for the Sandakphu panorama, with clear skies before the deep winter cold.
Festivals and events in November
November 2026 opens with Tihar, the five-day Nepali festival of lights, which falls on 6–10 November this year. It is the most beautiful time to see Darjeeling's homes and streets lit up.

During Tihar, groups of young people go house to house singing Deusi and Bhailo songs, and the whole town glows with oil lamps and fairy lights. Book early for this week, as many Kolkata travellers combine Diwali with a hill trip.
- Darjeeling Carnival. The 10-day carnival has traditionally been held in November, with local rock bands, food stalls, art and photo shows. Check this year's dates closer to your trip.
- Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival. Runs across November and December in parts of the district, with tea tastings, cultural shows and local food.
Tip: After Bhai Tika, mid to late November is quieter, with easier hotel bookings and lower rates than the festival week.
How to reach Darjeeling in November
The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and the nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB). Both are about 3 to 3.5 hours by road from Darjeeling, and a private cab is the most comfortable way up.
Our fixed fares are for the entire cab, not per person. They include tolls and parking:

Shared jeeps are cheaper but leave only when full and get very crowded during the Diwali week. A private cab lets you stop at viewpoints on the way up and reach your hotel before dark.
