Darjeeling in December 2026: Weather, Things to Do & Travel Guide

December is the clearest month of the year to see Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling. The monsoon haze is long gone, the skies are dry and blue, and on most mornings the whole snow range glows pink at sunrise.

It is also cold, festive and far less crowded than the October and May peaks. Hotels are easier to book, Christmas lights fill the Mall Road, and the toy train puffs through frosty mornings. If you can handle the chill, December rewards you with the best mountain views Darjeeling has to offer.

This guide covers December weather, what to pack, the best things to do, how to get here from NJP or Bagdogra, and a ready-made 3-day itinerary.

Darjeeling weather in December

Expect cold, dry and mostly sunny days, with daytime highs around 10–12°C and nights dropping to 2–4°C. Rain is rare, which is why visibility is at its best.

10–12°C

2–4°C, can touch 0°C late in the month

Tiger Hill at dawn

Around 0°C or below, with wind chill

Rain

Very little, usually 1–2 rainy days

Sunrise

Sunset

Kanchenjunga visibility

Excellent on most mornings

Will it snow? Snow in Darjeeling town is rare in December. If you want snow, Sandakphu and Phalut often get it, and Tiger Hill occasionally sees a light dusting. For guaranteed snow, combine Darjeeling with Zuluk or North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang).

Days are short, so start sightseeing early. Most places are best visited between 8 am and 3 pm, before the evening chill sets in.

What to pack for Darjeeling in December

Pack in layers, as it is mild in the afternoon sun and freezing after dark. Most hotels and homestays have limited room heating, so warm sleepwear matters.

  • A heavy jacket (down or padded) plus a fleece or sweater to layer under it
  • Thermal innerwear, top and bottom
  • Woollen cap, gloves, muffler and thick socks
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for steep lanes
  • Moisturiser, lip balm and sunscreen, as the air is dry and the sun is strong
  • A thermos for hot tea on the Tiger Hill trip
  • Power bank, since phone batteries drain fast in the cold
  • Basic medicines for cold, cough and motion sickness on hill roads
  • Original ID for hotel check-in, plus extra photocopies and photos if you plan to enter Sikkim

Best things to do in Darjeeling in December

  1. Tiger Hill sunrise. December gives you the best odds of a clear view of Kanchenjunga, and on very clear days, Everest in the distance. Leave your hotel by 4:15–4:30 am to reach before dawn, and dress for sub-zero cold.
  2. Ride the toy train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway joy ride to Ghoom and Batasia Loop is magical on crisp, sunny mornings. Book tickets on IRCTC in advance, especially for the Christmas week.
  3. Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery. Both sit on the Tiger Hill return route, so you can cover them on the same morning.
  4. Tea garden walks. Picking slows down in winter, but the estates are green, quiet and photogenic. Happy Valley is close to town; Peshok and Glenburn offer wide valley views.
  5. Peace Pagoda and Japanese Temple. Peaceful in the winter light, with good views over the town.
  6. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and HMI. See red pandas and snow leopards, then the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute museum next door. Note the zoo is closed on Thursdays.
  7. Mall Road and Chowrasta. Evening walks under Christmas lights, hot momos, thukpa and Darjeeling tea at the old cafés.
  8. Lamahatta and Peshok day trip. Pine forests, prayer flags and Teesta views, about an hour from town. See our Lamahatta–Peshok sightseeing package.
  9. Mirik and Kurseong. Quieter hill towns with a lake and orchid gardens, perfect for a relaxed day out. See our Kurseong day trip.
  10. Sandakphu for snow. The highest point in West Bengal often gets snow by December, with a panorama of four of the world's five highest peaks.

Festivals and events in December

Christmas and New Year are the big draws, but December also brings harvest and tea festivals to the hills. Exact dates for local festivals change every year, so check with us before you travel.

  • Christmas (25 December). St. Andrew's Church and the town's other old churches hold midnight mass and carol singing. Mall Road and Chowrasta are lit up, and bakeries like Glenary's sell plum cakes all week.
  • New Year's Eve (31 December). Hotels host bonfire nights and dinners, and Chowrasta fills with music and crowds. This is the busiest week of the month, so book hotels and cabs well ahead.
  • Darjeeling Orange Festival. Held mostly in December, it brings farmers from dozens of hill villages to show off the famous Darjeeling oranges, which are in season and sold everywhere.
  • Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival. Runs across November and December in various parts of the district, with tea tastings, cultural shows and local food.
  • Losoong. The Sikkimese and Bhutia harvest New Year usually falls in December. Monasteries in Sikkim, and some around Darjeeling, hold masked Cham dances, a great add-on if you are heading to Gangtok.

Tip: Between 22 December and 2 January, expect heavy traffic between Darjeeling and Ghoom, and higher hotel rates. Travel outside these dates if you want quieter roads and better deals.

How to reach Darjeeling in December

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and the nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB). Both are about 3 to 3.5 hours by road from Darjeeling, and a private cab is the most comfortable way up.

Our fixed December fares are for the entire cab, not per person. They include tolls and parking:

Route

NJP → Darjeeling

₹4,000

₹4,500

Bagdogra Airport → Darjeeling

Darjeeling → Gangtok

₹4,500

Darjeeling → Kalimpong

₹4,000

A 20% advance confirms your booking, and the balance is paid during the trip. We track your train or flight, so a late arrival at NJP or Bagdogra is not a problem.

Shared jeeps are cheaper but leave only when full, run until early afternoon, and are cramped with luggage. In December, with short daylight hours, a private cab saves you from reaching Darjeeling after dark and in the cold.

Have more time? Add two nights in Gangtok, or a 3-day Sandakphu trip for snow.

December travel tips and road conditions

Roads to Darjeeling are generally dry and open in December, with no monsoon landslides to worry about.

  • Book early for Christmas and New Year. Cabs, hotels and toy train seats sell out for 22 December to 2 January. Book 3–4 weeks ahead.
  • Morning fog and frost. Early mornings can bring fog near Ghoom and frost on shaded stretches. Our drivers know these roads and take them slowly.
  • Reach before dark. The sun sets around 4:45 pm. Plan arrivals and long drives for daylight hours.
  • Tiger Hill permits and traffic. Vehicles need a pass for Tiger Hill and the queue starts early. We handle the pass; you just need to be ready by 4:15 am.
  • Going to Sikkim? Carry original photo ID and passport photos. Nathula and North Sikkim need permits arranged a day or two in advance, and some high roads may close after heavy snow.
  • Carry cash. ATMs in town can run dry during peak weeks, and smaller shops on the sightseeing route may not take cards or UPI reliably.
  • Stay hydrated. The cold, dry air dehydrates you faster than you notice.
