Driving to Darjeeling? 5 Things You Must Know Before Bringing Your Own Car

Published on 23 March, 2026

Driving up to the Himalayas sounds like a dream road trip, but Darjeeling isn't your average destination. Between narrow "Z" bends and strict local laws, bringing your own vehicle can quickly become a logistical headache.

If you're planning to drive, here is the ground reality for 2026:

1. The "Local Sightseeing" Restriction

Important: Per local transport regulations, vehicles with outside registration (non-WB76 or non-local permits) are generally not allowed to do local sightseeing tours at points like Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, or Rock Garden. While you can use your car to drop your luggage at the hotel, you will likely need to hire a local Darjeeling cab for the actual sightseeing points to avoid fines or being stopped by local syndicates.

2. The Parking Crisis

Darjeeling is a hilltop town with very few flat surfaces. Most hotels "near the Mall" do not have private parking.

  • Public Parking: Most outside cars must be parked at the Old Supermarket or Jubilee Park parking lots, which are often full by 10:00 AM.

  • Walking: If you park in a public lot, be prepared to walk 15–20 minutes uphill with your bags to reach your hotel.

3. Steep Grades & High Altitudes

The roads like Pankhabari or the shortcuts through Rohini have gradients that can overheat the engines of standard hatchbacks or cars not used to mountain terrain. If you aren't experienced in "engine braking" or hill starts, the narrow, misty roads can be dangerous.

4. Pedestrian-Only Zones

The heart of Darjeeling (Chowrasta and Mall Road) is a No-Vehicle Zone. If your hotel is located here, your car won't be able to get within 500 meters of the entrance.

5. The Better Alternative?

Many travelers now drive to Siliguri, leave their cars in a secure long-term parking facility, and hire a professional Darjeeling cab for the climb. This allows you to:

  • Enjoy the views instead of clutching the steering wheel.

  • Get dropped off exactly at your hotel's doorstep (where allowed).

  • Access restricted sightseeing points without any legal issues.
